Over the years, many artists have inspired me. For example, Takashi Murakami Introduced me to graphic design by creating Kanyes 'Graduation' album artwork. This in turn led me down a path of self-discovery, and later, I implemented those influences into my own work.
However, this unique individual inspired me differently. Brian is the creative director for 'Ghetto Rodeo.' A streetwear brand that aims to build community through its garments, which are always presented with an impeccable form of storytelling. I had learned of this brand long before it had exploded into the mainstream, with now A-list celebrities sporting this brand's garments. What brought me to liking this brand was I could tell these garments were communicating personal stories from its designer. It just so happened that these stories which seem singular to Brian are also common themes and struggles that many latino americanos also face. Now the brand looks cool, and you definitely feel cool wearing the items. And that mainly comes from the garment meaning something to you. However, Brian always tells his audience that he never went to school to become a fashion designer. Which is a narrative that appeals to people like me. Since I, too, have never gone to school for design, yet is something I've always wanted to do.
As previously mentioned. Many people have inspired me, but I really owe it to this man. Largely because of the representation he created for people who look like me. This has given an entire community of people and myself the confidence needed to develop our own brands and tell our own unique stories. Potentially creating a chain reaction to which someday I too will have inspired that next creative. So on and so forth. Ultimately leading to a future where we can walk down any aisle at walmart or Target and have it filled with Latino owned brands!
Brian states most men don't receive their flowers until they die. So this is my way of giving him his flowers before he's gone. Thank you!! I know you've been around many celebrities but you were also able to inspire this kid from Chicago to start his own brand and tell his own unique stories!
